Ice climbing in Slovenia is like Canada in minature. There is a huge choice of routes of all grades and the scenery is breathtaking. The big advantages over Canada are the speed and cost of getting there, a one hour time difference and hardly any driving to get to the routes. We first ran courses here in 2007. The 2009 course will be guided by local IFMGA Guides, Tomaz Jakofcic, Klemen Gricar, plus another member of our regular ice climbing guide team, depending on numbers. Based from a comfortable Slovenian hotel in Kranjska Gora, this course gives six days climbing guided at 1:2 in this fascinating country on the eastern fringe of the European Alps. Places are limited to six, so we recommend that you book early. It's a good idea to have already done some steep waterfall climbing, preferably in the Alps, prior to joining this course. But if you have climbed steep Scottish ice routes or had a few visits to an indoor climbing wall, and understand basic ropework (belaying/abseiling) you can join. Climbers are paired according to their abilities and ambitions.
Experience RequiredThis intermediate course is guided at 1:2 ratio. As a minimum, we would recommend having completed a Chamonix Long Weekend course or in Scotland, our Snow and Ice Climbing course.
PreparationTo climb icefalls and enjoy the experience, you need good basic level of fitness and to be reasonably determined. Indoor climbing will help to tone muscles and improve your grip strength, as well as training your balance and overall agility.
